first time at school

Plaza

Hello once again!
Here’s what’s been going on since my last post:
I went to a mall with Cata and José Ignació on Wednesday, apparently it is the biggest mall in Chile, and it sure is huge! We went to the cinema there too and we only had to pay 1500 Pesos per person. That’s about 3$, or 2.50Fr. It wasn’t an old movie or anything either! We watched ‘the wolf of Wall street’, none of us got the point of the movie though. Well it was fun anyway!
Then on Wednesday I finally got to see Lea! She lives really close to the school; it only takes her like 4 minutes to walk!  She lives on the 8th floor of an apartment building. We talked a lot and I got to meet her host family. They’re all really nice and said I could come over any time and sleep over too. I think I’m going to take them up on that offer at some point. : )
After some ice cream we went to the school. They showed us around and talked about rules a little. We also got our uniforms. The uniform is blue jeans and then a T-Shirt from the school in blue or red. In winter there’s a sweatshirt. For sports they to wear  a red shirt and black shorts(from school).
Then I went back to Lea’s place for a while, later my host mum picked me up.
We had dinner pretty late and I was in bed later than I had planned too.
The next morning, my first morning at the Colegio Suizo (Swiss School) I was pretty tired and nervous! Paula my host mum drove us to school the first morning. I got to my class (P4) and one girl told me to sit next to her, I was really glad! Her name is Sofía.
This week everyone only had school until 1pm on both days, I was very happy about that! After three hours of school I was really really tired, I don’t think I could have gone any longer!
The first day we the intercambios(exchange students) were presented in front of the whole school.
I also had to present myself in front of my class. Other than that, the teachers talked about what they’re going to do this year and we didn’t actually start with any real work, except for Philosophy there the teacher talked really fast during the whole class and I had absolutely no idea what was going on! I think it’s going to get easier every day though.
Us the intercambios are going to have private Castellano (Spanish) classes 4 times a week. I really like them, and they’re more relaxed and the teacher doesn’t talk quite as fast! When I got home yesterday I didn’t do much at first, I was too exhausted.
On the first day when the little kids have their first day of elementary school they get 'Schultüten', like they have in Germany - apparently they think that's swiss! : ) Most kids use backpacks that roll, I'll have to take a picture for you at some point, because I think they're pretty hilarious!
Later I played some Ligretto with the boys and Tamara. The boys absolutely love that game, and I think it’s kind of cool that I brought that game to Siri and Sten in Portland and now to José Iganció and Andreu here in Santiago.
Later they showed me a playground that is in a little park, well not really a park, but there’s some grass and benches and then the playground. I really like it and it’s very close by too. They call it the plaza.
Today was my second day of school, everything was a little easier. I did have two hours of math though. I like the teacher but I had no idea what they talked about. We also had art, and the intercambios had another class of castellano. After that I had two hours of castellano with my class. I don’t really know what was going on, but they again talked about the PSU a lot. My class is going to finish school this December, before that they’re going to have this huge test called the PSU. Well it’s a really big deal here, school is altogether. They have 45 hours of school every week. My class in Switzerland has 35 classes a week. And it’s not like they don’t have any homework, they have to study lots too and my math teacher for example told the class that they’re going to have 2.5 hours of homework every week. Every test here is very important, every single test of the last 4 years counts towards your graduation grade, so you can’t really have a bad day or anything like that!
Today was also the first day that we went to school with the furgón escolar. It’s like a little bus, for about 15 people. We get picked up by Orlando the driver at 7:20am the bus is already have full by then, I think there’s a girl from my class in the bus too but I’m not sure. : ) After we pick up some more kids we should get to school around 7:45, and then school starts at 8am.
On the way back it’s pretty much all little kids, the older ones take the bus home do other stuff before going home. I’m going to take the furgón escolar both ways for March and then in April I might take the public bus home. I don’t think I’m going to take the public one to school though, that one takes even longer!
On the way back we’re also the last people Orlando drops off, so we weren’t home before 2pm. It was nice to listen to music though and I got to see some more of Santiago too.
All in all I'd say the school is more like the one in Portland than the one in Switzerland. Except that it's a very small school, there are only 400 students in the whole school. And because they grow up together everyone knows each other. The last 4 years there are only 2 classes per grade and there's between 13 and 25 kids per class. Another thing that I really like is that there are little kids from age 5 on or so in the school too, so really it’s a huge mix!
This afternoon I slept for 3 hours and then went to the plaza (the little park) again.
Well now it’s finally weekend – I don’t know what we’re going to do though. I guess it’ll be very spontaneous as usual.

Playa Adventures

Hello again!
Now it's not two in the morning anymore so I'm actually going to write about my time in ConCón!
Really we had lots of relaxed days with lots of going to the beach for a couple of hours just to relax. Still there was always something going on and I didn't really spend a lot of time reading or doing stuff by myself. I'm just going to tell you about some of the bigger more interesting things that we did:
One day we went walking around in Viña del mar, it was really nice. There's this clock that is made of flowers...
Another day Cata, José Ignació and I took a surfing class - it was really cool! None of us where very good but it was fun anyway and we did manage to stand up a couple of times.
Then this weekend we went to the Dunes, lots of people where sandsledding or sandboarding. I tried both and it was lots of fun, although the boarding really just was standing on a board and waiting until you fall down, you weren't able to do turns or anything like that! : ) Cata and I took some more cool pictures too!
And then maybe the most exciting thing: THE COLOR RUN!!!! This is the website if you want to check it out: http://thecolorrun.cl/
The color run is a 5K, so you run 5 km. But after every km they throw color at you. And in the end there's a festival with music where everyone throws around color and really it's just lots of fun!
I did that with José Ignació and Andreu and we all enjoyed it a lot.

Ok I think that's pretty much all I can tell you for right now, we're about to go to a mall. I need some more jeans because that's part of the school uniform. Tomorrow I have to go to the school in the afternoon and they are going to tell us what we need to know.

Have fun looking at the pictures!
Love you,
Lena

back in Santiago

Hello again!
I'm back in Santiago and finally have some decent internet again, but you'll have to wait for a post about my whole beach trip and for more photos until tomorrow... Sorry! We got back really late and I've been pretty busy...
But here you have some photos of one evening at the beach. The girl is Cata and the boy is my hermano (host brother) José Ignació.

Concón

Hey!! :)
Sooooo we went to the playa monday afternoon. I share a room with cata (17), my 'cousin' she's really nice! The house is pretty small but in a cute way.
The first day we went to the beach and i finally got to do some handstands! :)
So far we went to Viña del mar, a city close by and walked around some, walked around in Concón which is where we are. And tonight we drove around in Varapaiso.
The days start very late, breakfast at 1pm. Lunch between 3 and 6 pm and dinner between 9 pm and 1 am. I would absolutely love this schedule, except that i wake up by 9am, and by 1 am I'm super tired but no one even thinks about going to bed before 2 am!!
The weather is nice in the afternoon, but not super hot which I'm happy about!
So I'm still alive and enjoying my vacation! :)
Pictures will follow once i'm back in Santiago!
Miss you
Lena

Swiss School/schweizerschule

We didn't end up leaving for the beach yesterday after all. Once I had given them all of their presents (which they loved) they told me we would leave the next day, because...  - well I don't really know.
I was pretty happy about just having a nice relaxed evening at home, I thought I could maybe read for a while... But then they decided we would go look at Santiago, which was super cool too!
We went to the Cerro San Cristóbal, which is like a big hill in the very middle of Santiago. There were lots of people biking or jogging (we drove, my familia is not sporty!!), then we took several stops while driving up the hill. The first one was at the japanese garden, a really cute little place! There was a tree that Japan had given Santiago (or Chile) for it's 200th birthday.
Then the next stop was higher up and we had a very nice view of one part of the city. The highest building of South America is also in Santiago and you could see it from there too.
Then we went even higer up and then walked to the very top. I had a little race with the boys, and it felt nice to finally run and be a little active!
Up at the top we had an even nicer view, there was a very pretty sunset and we waited until it got dark and you could see all of the lights, it was all very pretty!
Then we had dinner at an Italian restaurant, I had Lasagna, the only vegetarian thing they had.
Later we went by the Swiss School and looked at it from the outside, it had all fences around it so you couldn't actually go inside. Anyway almost everything in Santiago seems to have fences around it.
We got home at 11pm and I was in bed by midnight, I feel asleeep right away - I'm still pretty jetlagged and all of the Spanish is making me tired.
This morning I got up at 10:30, had breakfast with Andrés and Andreu and now I have a little time while the others get up and have breakfast.
Then we'll leave and finally go to the beach. They said it's about a two hour drive, and I'm pretty excited to see some more of Chile.
I took some pictures with my cellphone and I'll try to upload some of them, but I'm not really sure how that will work. : )

First post from Santiago de Chile!! :)

erster Blick auf Chile
Hey!!
Ok I don't have a lot of time, so this will be rather short!
I left on Thursday the 13th of Feb., my flights were from Zurich to Paris to Atlanta to Santiago, all of them were pretty good! I didn't sleep very much, just an hour or so but it was alright!
When I got to Santiago they informed me that my suitcase was still in Atlanta. Well I sure was excited about that! Then I walked through customs and they were all there to pick me up!
Ok here's what happened yesterday in short version:
We came home, they showed me around, the house is really small but I really like my room and I get my own tiny bathroom!
Once I had unpacked what little stuff I had, I played some game station with the boys, I was pretty bad and the boys thought that was really funny!
Later we went to a party, because the grandfather turned 91 yesterday. Everyone was really nice! But I didn't really pick up on much that happened, I just tried not to fall asleep!
When we got home I pretty much went straight to bed and slept for a solid 12 hours. This morning after breakfast I figured out the Internet password and then we went to the mercado. It was pretty dirty and there was lots of garbage, Chileans don't really care about any of that though...
My familia is very worried about feeding me, they think I'm going to starve because I don't eat meat.  : )

When we got home we had lunch and my suitcase got here!!! YAY!!!
Now I repacked, because we're about to leave for  the playa. I won't have Internet there, so don't freak out if you don't here anything from me for a week or so!
Their Spanish is really fast and a little weird, but if I concentrate and they slow down, I can understand most of what's going on!

How it all happened

In my school in Switzerland they offer you a semester abroad at the Suisse School in Santiago de Chile if you are in the Spanish...
Doesn't really matter! I get to go to Chile! :)
